Include Your Pets in Your Emergency Preparedness Plans

HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS FOR YOUR PETS

Hopefully by now you have made preparations for your pets for this hurricane.

Each pet should be wearing a collar and tags with up-to-date contact information. If you don't have tags, write your phone number on their collar with an indelible marker. If your pets are microchipped, make sure your chip information is current.

Keep a leash and/or carrier near your door. Make sure you have proper equipment for pets to ride in the car (carriers, harnesses, pet seatbelts). Write your name and contact information on pet carriers in indelible ink.

IF YOU MUST EVACUATE:

Never leave your pets behind if you evacuate. Never EVER leave your pet outside. Make a list of everything you'll need to care for your pet away from home (food and water for at least a week; cat litter box and litter; plastic poop bags; medications for at least two weeks; medical records for each pet; sturdy leashes and harnesses; microchip number.

If you SHELTER IN PLACE:

Select a safe room (preferably an interior room with no or few windows). Remove any toxic chemicals or plants. Close off small areas where frightened cats could get stuck in (such as vents or beneath heavy furniture).

Pets will become frightened of storms and need their family close by. They count on us to take care of them at all times. Please don't let them down!
