Scientific American editor-in-chief Laura Helmuth has resigned one week after going on a tirade in which she called voters of President-elect Donald Trump "f**king fascists" on election night.

“I’ve decided to leave Scientific American after an exciting 4.5 years as editor in chief,” Helmuth announced on her Bluesky -- a social media platform alternative to billionaire Trump supporter Elon Musk's X -- account Thursday (November 14).

Helmuth shared a series of posts online bashing Trump voters amid his victory over Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election on November 5, questioning why she would show "solidarity" to them.

“Solidarity to everybody whose meanest, dumbest, most bigoted high-school classmates are celebrating early results because f**k them to the moon and back,” Helmuth wrote in one post on Bluesky on Nov. 5.

“I apologize to younger voters that my Gen X is full of f**king fascists," she wrote in another post.

“Every four years I remember why I left Indiana (where I grew up) and remember why I respect the people who stayed and are trying to make it less racist and sexist. The moral arc of the universe isn’t going to bend itself,” Helmuth wrote.

Helmuth's posts were met with backlash as many Trump supporters demanded she resign, arguing she was unable to do her job objectively. Helmuth deleted her posts soon after and published a Scientific American article entitled 'Election Grief is Real. Here's How to Cope,' the following day.

Helmuth issued a statement apologizing for her comments on November 7.

"I made a series of offensive and inappropriate posts on my personal Bluesky account on election night, and I am sorry," she wrote. "I respect and value people across the political spectrum. These posts, which I have deleted, do not reflect my beliefs; they were a mistaken expression of shock and confusion about the election results. These posts of course do not relfect the position of Scientific American or my colleagues. I am committed to civil communication and editorial objectivity."
