Police Rescue Man From Mountains Who Broke Quarantine To Buy Cigarettes

A French man had to be rescued after he got lost in the mountains while trying to buy a pack of cigarettes. French officials said that the man, who was not identified, left quarantine on Saturday (April 4) but found the roads blocked by police checkpoints.

With the roads closed, the man decided to go around them by hiking through the mountains into Spain. The hike did not go well, as the man got lost and then fell into a stream. He called for help, and the French mountain rescue service sent a helicopter to airlift him out of the wilderness.

The agency shared photos of the rescue on Facebook and said the man was fined €135 ($146) for breaking quarantine. They advised residents to stay at home and abide by the stay at home orders put in place to help slow the spread of COVID-19.
