The Kansas City Police Department is investigating one of its own after an off-duty officer who works for the department accidentally shot his neighbor early Monday morning when his service weapon unintentionally fired.

According to a news release from the department, the shooting occurred at around 12:30 a.m. Monday when the officer was inside his home. The officer, a 24-year police veteran, called for help saying he accidentally shot his neighbor, who was identified as a man in his 30s. The victim was taken to a hospital where he was reported to be in stable condition Monday morning.

A preliminary investigation showed the officer's service weapon fired and entered the home of his neighbor, who lived to the south. Another woman who was near the victim and others inside the victim's home were not injured.

The officer, who is assigned to the Metro's Patrol Division, will be placed on administrative leave during the initial investigation. The Kansas City Police Department's Homicide Unit will investigate the shooting.
