MS Senator Wicker on death of Iranian terrorist leader.

President Trump is justifying his decision to launch a missile strike that claimed the life of Iran's top general. In a tweet this morning, the President said Qassem Soleimani [[ KAH-sam soo-leh-MAHN-ee ]] killed or badly wounded thousands of Americans. Trump claimed the general was plotting to kill many more. The President wrote that Soleimani was directly and indirectly responsible for the deaths of millions of people, including a large number of protesters inside Iran itself. He added that Soleimani was hated and feared inside that nation. Trump closed with the general should have been taken out many years ago.

U.S. Senator Roger Wicker, R-Miss., today issued the following statement after the U.S. Department of Defense confirmed the death of Qasem Soleimani, the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force:

“Qasem Soleimani was a terrorist responsible for attacks that killed hundreds of American troops in Iraq and caused chaos across the Middle East. The President’s action makes clear the United States will not tolerate attacks against our nation, such as the Iranian-organized assault against our embassy in Baghdad this week. Yesterday’s successful operation also demonstrated the skill and power of America’s men and women in uniform. I am grateful for their commitment and service.”

The U.S. embassy in Baghdad is urging U.S. citizens to leave Iraq. The embassy issued a warning after a U.S. rocket attack killed Iranian General Qassem Soleimani [[ kah-sam soo-leh-mahn-ee ]]. The warning urges American citizens to "heed the January 2020 Travel Advisory and depart Iraq immediately." The embassy says U.S. citizens should depart by airline while possible, and "failing that, to other countries via land." The State Department has also issued a warning, telling Americans not to go to the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.

The president of Iran is vowing retaliation for the U.S. airstrike that killed Soleimani. President Hassan Rouhani [[ roo-HAH-nee ]] called the rocket attack a "cowardly act," and vowed that Iran and "other free nations" of the region will take revenge against the U.S.  U.S. ally Great Britain is urging 'all parties to de-escalate' following the U.S. airstrike. In a statement, British Foreign Minister Dominic Raab said "Further conflict is in none of our interests." Israel Army Radio says the Israeli military has gone on heightened alert, amid fears that Iran could strike through it's allies in the region, such as Hezbollah or Hamas.
