Authorities in Canada arrested nine people in connection with last year's $15 million gold heist at Pearson International Airport in Toronto.
Authorities said that theft was an inside job and that several Air Canada employees were charged.
Officials have recovered $312,000 worth of cash and six gold bracelets, representing only a fraction of the 6,600 bars of pure gold and $1.8 foreign cash stolen in the heist. They also found documents accounting for 7.21 million and $10.23 million of the stolen gold.
They believe most of the gold was melted down and sold. The money was then used to purchase illegal firearms.
"We believe that they've melted down the gold and the profits they got from the gold they used to help finance the firearms, obviously purchasing the illegal firearms," said Detective Sgt. Mike Mavity of the Peel Regional Police. "We believe that's how the gold and money has now kind of worked into the firearms trafficking aspect of the investigation."
One of the suspects was detained in the United States after he was pulled over in Pennsylvania in possession of 65 illegal firearms. Investigators said that he was the driver of the cargo truck used in the heist.
Authorities said they are still looking for three others wanted in connection with the case.
